MLD Assistant Professor Virginia Smith was selected as a 2023 Samsung AI Researcher of the Year.

Virginia Smith, a faculty member in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science, was selected as a 2023 Samsung AI Researcher of the Year.

Samsung's AI Researcher of the Year program recognizes promising researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. Awardees receive $30,000 in prize money.

Smith, an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department, was one of five researchers honored for 2023. Smith's research aims to make federated learning — a technique that considers performing machine learning across private data silos — as seamless and secure as learning over centralized data.
