Five SCS Specialties Ranked No. 1 by U.S. News and World Report

The School of Computer Science's programs in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, game development, programming languages and software engineering ranked No. 1 in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings.

Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science racked up five top-ranked specialty areas and maintained its No. 1 overall ranking for computer science in U.S. News and World Report's 2022 Best Colleges rankings

The school ranked first in the specialty areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, game development, programming languages and software engineering. This is the first year the school held the top spots in game development and programming languages.

CMU's management information systems program also received a No. 1 specialty area ranking.

"Carnegie Mellon University has long been synonymous with excellence, and I am delighted to see our world-renowned strengths highlighted in these rankings, including the number one spot for our undergraduate computer science program and several specialties related to computer science, engineering and business," said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. "By ensuring our programs remain at the cutting-edge of areas that are driving our global economy and defining humanity's future, we will help to prepare our students to take on the challenges of a changing world."

Overall, CMU ranked 25th on the list of best national universities. Sixteen specialties placed fifth or higher, including the six receiving a No. 1 ranking.

This 37th edition of Best Colleges assesses 1,466 U.S. bachelor's degree-granting institutions on 17 measures of academic quality. U.S. News surveyed schools during the spring and summer of 2021.
