SCS alumnus Adam Pennington and Associate Dean for Outreach Mark Stehlik are among the winners of this year's Alumni Awards.

The Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association annually recognizes alumni, students and faculty for their service to the university and their achievements in the arts, humanities, business and other fields. Since the first Alumni Awards were presented in 1950, more than 880 individuals have been honored through the program.

This year, two awardees from the School of Computer Science have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in their professional fields and dedicated service to the university.

Adam Pennington (CS 2001, E 2003) will be honored with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes volunteer service to the university or any of its alumni organizations. This includes active participation in alumni interest groups like the AB Tech Alumni group, which Pennington not only founded but also currently leads. He also served on the university's Alumni Association Board from 2011 to 2015.

Mark Stehlik will receive the Faculty and Staff Impact Award for going above and beyond his role as an educator and demonstrating extraordinary service and commitment to SCS graduates.  Since 1982, Stehlik has been teaching undergraduate classes. He became assistant dean for undergraduate education in 1988, and in that role shepherded more than 2,500 students through the undergraduate computer science program. In 2012, he began his tenure as associate dean for education at Carnegie Mellon Qatar. He is currently back in Pittsburgh as assistant dean for outreach in SCS, where he works to strengthen ties with local elementary and high schools to ensure that all students have the opportunity to pursue STEM fields in college.

Pennington and Stehlik will be honored in a ceremony on Friday, May 19, as part of the university's commencement weekend celebrations.
