Elbret

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The leader of the Shorin clan; fighter/mage, probably 8/8. The party first met her at the high-elven summit meeting at the Nirduk base in AK 592, and the first things they learned about her were that she's so slimy she practically oozes and that she has a real disdain for humans. She and Streck were planning to arrange a subleader exchange (each hoping their second would take out the other leader), but Ganeth called off the idea after his first meeting with Elbret and some of the other Shorin (where he was simultaneously proposed to, given the Zzifl circlet and a coded letter about the Nirduk Vault, and nearly killed by a scarab, a Shala, and probably a few other things as well).

Elbret isn't Good (by her own admission, and it's obvious anyway) but she has (or had) access to a number of fairly potent Good-aligned items (possibly through Hajmola), including the Zzifl circlet and a device for scrying through the ethereal plant network. She has contacts among the Easterners (or at least the ability to hire a Shala assassin), gnomes (providing access to workers and tech), wererats (part of the party's opposition during the Nirduk Vault business), and dops (but that's no surprise for a high-elven clan); she's also friends with a sailor named Ironclaw (named for his magical metal hand that gives him great strength; he also has a magical boat that he sails to the southern continent). Silvator doesn't hold her abilities and resourcefulness in high esteem, but she's doing pretty well so far (aside from letting a few PCs stymie her attempt to ransack the Vault, anyway). She claims to have killed Streck, but nobody's buying it; she probably does know something about his disappearance, though. The Red Mage reportedly considers her to be "a very talented and interesting woman", though he recently parted company with her over her dealings with the spiders; doing any justice at all to the party's opinion of her requires words that would probably melt your monitor.

Given Elbret's dislike of humans, her relationship with the Red Mage seemed rather surprising; it initially caused us to suspect the the Red Mage was actually Hajmola taking on a mortal form, but the true culprit was a quasi-artifact ring of fire. The Red Mage had it and needed to lose it in a duel; Elbret wanted it; and thus the match was made. (They both also seem to have reasons for opposing the Spiders, probably thanks to Haj.) Unfortunately, Elbret barely survived her attempt to kill Flambeau, the Red Mage's familiar; apparently the ring (which supports whomever it pleases in these duels) considers her unworthy.

Elbret initially seemed equally happy to marry Ganeth (to take advantage of his good-guy image -- she's been telling people that he's trying to unify the high-elven clans -- and lend legitimacy to her claim to the Nirduk Vault) or to kill him, but she seems to have decided that she'd really rather have him alive and part of the Shorin clan. (This makes sense for a number of reasons: she needs his mind intact to get the Vault combination, he's an obvious source of assistance against the spiders, and she probably doesn't like having to use Kalis as her top subleader any more than Streck did. And though she's quite jealous of Ganeth, whom the fire ring has chosen as its favored recipient, she might want to keep the ringbearer close at hand in case it changes its mind in true fickle Chaotic fashion.)

At last report, Elbret was in the desert answering riddles for sphinxes; according to Arten, she's trying to "regain lost power" and get some artifacts that have something to do with octagons and a "door against spiders". The Red Mage thinks she's actually getting ready to camp out near Silverton to finish off wounded adventurers and steal their items, but she's also cross at the spiders after they took over her base off the Silverton coast, complete with magic item cache, so she's basically gunning for anyone she can get.
