Streck Brightblade Nirduk
After Sonek passed away, his eldest son, Streck, took over the clan.
Streck was apparently never the total bastard his father was (he and
the Emperor were reportedly close friends just before the Empire fell
because they both loved to discuss philosophy), and getting hit by a
prismatic spray drastically changed his outlook on life. The rays may
have sent him to another plane for about fifty years...well, he wrote
a book about it for the Library of
Hollerith, anyway. (They keep it in the Forbidden Knowledge section.)
They also made him a little insane: he thinks he's an avatar of
Corellan, sent to watch over the elves of the world. This turned out
to be a Really Good Thing: it's made him drift towards good, break off
relations with the shades, covertly support the Eastern
revolutionaries, oppose the machinations of the "Forces of the
Octagon" (the spiders?), and support the Library of Hollerith
(particularly their archeological expedition in Auramkil). It also makes him
difficult to deal with sometimes, but what can you expect from a
megalomaniac?
Streck has many contacts in various parts of the world, including Lord
Rogtubbins and Lady Ylena (who dined with Streck every month or
so) in the West; Kharnzeel,
whom he probably believed to be a revolutionary (or one of their
contacts) in Banzeel but is actually for working for a decidedly more
sinister cause; Sukumar, a merchant in Auramkil who's coordinating the
Hollerith expedition's excavations (and who may be based on the
southern continent); and Nyunchuk, possibly a priest or explorer who
was investigating some ruins in the desert.
Streck disappeared shortly before the Shadowing,
possibly expecting that as an avatar, it wouldn't be good to stick
around for it. Our only leads are the correspondence Ganeth discovered within the Vault:
- A letter to Kharnzeel, dated a week before Streck's disappearance.
The letter accompanied the third of ten 500gp payments to sponsor the
revolution and mentioned that Streck would like to visit Banzeel
sometime and see what the revolution has managed to accomplish.
- A letter to Sukumar, asking for a six month extension on a 3kgp debt.
- A letter to Nyunchuk, dated eleven days before Streck's
disappearance. In this letter, he says that "the time has come to
leave, at least for now" and that he planned to meet Nyunchuk in the
village of Pikchik within two weeks to go investigate some ruins in
the desert. The ruins have something to do with spider idols and a
Portal of the Eightfold Path. (At least Nyunchuk has been paid.)
- A discarded draft of a letter to Ganeth. Part of it talked about
the impending Shadowing (though Streck referred to it as the Coming of
Darkness) and stated that it would be best if he left before being
weakened by separation from Arvandor. The rest would have asked
Ganeth to accompany him on a mission against the Forces of the Octagon
(if he'd actually sent it, that is).
Based on these letters, our guess is that he traveled through a gate
in a ruined desert spider temple and was offplane fighting Rakni in
some way, shape, or form. (Ganeth has recently begun to suspect that
Rakni was originally identified with geometrical constructs such as
octagons and took on spiders later in life, possibly to gain a
beachhead through the original spider philosophers.) All we really
know is that he was too far away for a sending from Lord
Rogtubbins to reach him. (Elbret
claims to have killed him, but we doubt this; Streck probably had
enough personal protections running that we're not even sure
we could take him out. Kelmin recently heard a rumor that
he's back, but if so, he's not answering sendings and hasn't contacted
Lady Ylena.)
