Notes This modification to the PN-standard Triumphant-class BB is intended to help counter the Alliance advantage in missile throw weight since the introduction of the Honor Harrington-class SDP. The refit consists of stripping out the flag bridges, two-fifths of the Troop Deck, and the majority of the normal broadside energy armament in order to accommodate additional broadside missile tubes and the fire control and magazine space to support them. The total increased magazine capacity gives this sub-class the same number of missiles per tube as the base class.
In addition, the original impeller suite has been replaced with Solarian-designed nodes to increase the maximum wedge strength. Although the impeller upgrade has no effect on the ship's acceleration ability, the more powerful (and somewhat larger) wedge allows this sub-class to carry more powerful sidewalls than the base class, and to tractor one additional missile pod (12 instead of the original 11).
Tactical doctrine being developed for the Triumphant-A calls for one or two squadrons to accompany a standard wall of battle to just inside maximum missile range of an enemy wall, at which point the BBs would fire their full broadsides and flush their pods, then scatter away from the wall at maximum acceleration, taking any opportunity to attack enemy screening units as they flee. In normal situations, the enemy wall will be too busy to chase — which is a good thing for the Triumphant-As, as their scanty energy armament makes them easy meat for any enemy ship larger than a BC (and many BCs, as well). These ships' poor defensive posture does not endear them to their crews, who call them "Fins" (short for "coffins," but the Citizen Commissioners don't know that).
