Spinning Orb

This is a monorail.
Fundamental Principle and History

This toy’s operating principle is based on centripetal force.

Operation

The toy is operated by spinning it very quickly in one direction. Once it gets fast enough, the user should start to pull the ends of the strings and watch the toy start to pulse. Once the toy has this rhythm, the user can start to spin it in an additional direction, making patterns with the light and orb. The orb changes diameter as the tension on the two strings changes.

Construction cost will be fairly high, as the wooden train sets I’ve seen Construction cost will be minimal, as the toy just requires LEDs, rubber, and string. The toy is very durable and will last a while. Periodically the batteries will need to be replaced, but that cost is minimal.

Age Group

This toy is intended for ages 10 and up. It’s slightly more complicated than a yo-yo, and might frustrate younger children. The toy is very safe, but contains small parts, so small children shouldn’t use it.
