The Imperial Elite Guard, a corps of mounted fighter-mages, dates back to at least the third century AK, when Lessania was briefly a member. Members of several influential clans were generally among their ranks, and being accepted into the Guard was a major political step up, both personally and for one's family. Ganeth was supposed to be joining this crew after his intended marriage to Solera Parnos (and retired Guard member Veros Remen was hired to train him accordingly), but that was before he was supposedly assassinated in AK 555. (Perhaps this was fortunate, since he'd spent his last non-weapon proficiency slot learning Orcish instead of horseriding.) During the last days of the Empire in AK 579, the Guard still controlled the forts on the periphery of what was left of the Empire, but the area within the mountains was run by their main rivals, the Nirduks. Their insignia appeared on the "Box of Doom" that dogged Ganeth while the party was working against the undead before Kambheer (as pawns of a strange alliance of grey elves, high elves, shades, spiders, druids, and maybe yet more players), as well as on several of the goodies inside. After the Empire fell, several survivors of the Elite Guard became the Balan clan and presumably headed for the southern continent with all the other high elves.
The Marek clan is trying to establish itself as the new Elite Guard in Auramkil.
