Shantanu Gupta, Ian Waudby-Smith, Emre Yolcu and Minji Yoon — all students with ties to SCS — have been named 2023 Amazon Graduate Research Fellows.

Amazon has selected Shantanu Gupta, Ian Waudby-Smith, Emre Yolcu and Minji Yoon — all students with ties to the School of Computer Science — as its latest graduate research fellows.

This is the third class for the program, which launched in 2021 to support graduate students researching automated reasoning, computer vision, robotics, language technology, machine learning, operations research and data science. Fellows are invited to interview for a science internship at Amazon.

Gupta, a Ph.D. student in the Machine Learning Department (MLD), researches the development of algorithms for efficiently estimating a target parameter when multiple data sources each return to different sets of features. He is advised by Zachary Lipton, assistant professor of operations research and machine learning who also works as a consultant for Amazon, and David Childers, assistant professor of economics.

Waudby-Smith, a Ph.D. student in statistics and data science in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, works on developing online changepoint detection algorithms that determine if and when an online data stream has had a change in distribution. He is advised by Aaditya Ramdas, an Amazon Visiting Academic and assistant professor in both MLD and the Department of Statistics and Data Science.

Yolcu, a fellow in 2022 and 2021 and a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science Department, will focus on automated reasoning and proof complexity. He is advised by Marijn Heule, associate professor of computer science and an Amazon Scholar.

Yoon, also a fellow in 2022 and 2021 and a Ph.D. student in computer science, attempts to make deep learning graphs more practical. She is advised by Christos Faloutsos, the Fredkin Professor of Computer Science and an Amazon Scholar, and Ruslan Salakhutdinov, professor of computer science.
