What We're Doing

Orientation 2022

The SCS DEI Office is preparing to welcome new members of our community for the 2022-2023 academic year. If you are interested in having a member of the DEI Team join an orientation event, email us.

SCS DEI Training Update

We have completed our first evaluation of the All-SCS DEI Training, v0. Thanks to those who participated in the pilot evaluation and provided valuable feedback. We will continue to evaluate and add to the training, informed by materials from the Cultural Competence in Computing Fellows Program and the International Institute for Restorative Practices.

CS Pathways Summer Programs

CS Pathways concluded their summer programs last week. 57 students from underrepresented, underresourced and underestimated backgrounds traveled to campus for AI4All and Computer Science Scholars. Over the course of their respective experiences, students not only learned about humanistic AI and computer science principles but also gained valuable metacurricular skills around applying to college, group work, careers in computer science and self-care.

The DEI Office will host a welcome dinner for Women@SCS from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, in the Newell Simon Atrium. We will also have a special toast for Noel Newell at 7 p.m. that evening. Members of the Women@SCS Community should save the date and stay tuned for more information.

The 2022 OurCS: Women in Tech Conference will take place Oct. 21–23. We will open the call for applications this week, and the call for mentors and volunteers in the next week or two. Stay tuned for more information if you are an undergraduate student interested in applying to attend the event (free) or a Ph.D. student, post-doc or faculty member interested in volunteering, giving a talk or mentoring a team.

The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project, a NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education program, will host a six-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from Oct. 3 to Nov. 22 via edX. Participants will learn to cultivate inclusive classroom environments; how to be a reflective, inclusive practitioner; engage in reflection and discussion around topics of equity and inclusion; and implement inclusive teaching methods in their courses. Register on the edX website.

Thank you,
The SCS DEI Team
