SCS Doctoral Advising

Project Goals

SCS launched its Doctoral Advising Project in the spring of 2021 to continually improve the quality of advising for doctoral students across the school. In particular, we aim to raise both the floor and the ceiling for the quality of advising relationships between advisers and students.  By raising the floor, we reduce and eliminate poor relationships. By raising the ceiling, we foster excellence in relationships and in our advising efforts.

We ground our ever-evolving work in a set of values for advisers and advisees that we developed through conversations with stakeholders. We've included our values and resources to support the adviser-advisee relationship here, and welcome feedback, materials and observations.

Values

We encourage you to read about the advising values for advisers and advisees that we've developed with our community. We welcome your feedback as an adviser, advisee or member of the SCS community.

Resources

We've compiled a continually growing library of advising resources — some specific to Carnegie Mellon and some that are more general.  We have also collected SCS doctoral advising policies and readings. We welcome suggestions for additions.
