Samba Quick Start Guide
There is a samba server running on the file server (carna). What this means
to you is that you can access your Unix files from any PC (without resorting to scp or ftp). All of the partitions on the file server, all of the tmp partitions on the compute nodes, and your home directory (if it is stored on the VASC server rather than afs) can be accessed via samba.
Getting Started
If you need to use samba, send email with your unix username to Daniel Huber (dhuber@cs.cmu.edu) to have your name added to the list of people allowed to use the samba server.
Accessing Files from Windows
These instructions are for Windows XP, but the process is similar in Vista.
- Start windows explorer.
- Under the tools menu, select "Map Network Drive...".
- For the "path" field, enter "\\carna\x", where x is replaced with one of the following:
- samba - access lab machine partitions by names like "islay_tmp1"
- <your_username> - use your own username to access your VASC home directory
- In the "connect as" field, enter your username. Windows XP machines have
both a username and password field. On a non-facilitized machine, enter the
username as SCS\<your_username>. Then click "OK". - The drive should show up in the main explorer window in a few seconds. If
desired, you can automatically have the drive mounted every time you login
to windows (just select the "reconnect at logon" box in the map network
drive dialog).
Note: If using "carna" in the path field does not work, you may try the full name: carna.ius.cs.cmu.edu
Some additional comments:
- Currently, the mounting of your home directory does not work if your home
directory is in AFS, but it IS possible to mount afs directories in
windows. Use the openafs client available on monolith (see the facilities help web site for details). - If you find any security issues (like being able to write in directories
you don't think you should be able to), please notify Daniel Huber (dhuber@cs.cmu.edu). - For system administration issues (like restarting the server and adding
users, see the system administration instructions.
