Notes This class is an enlarged revision of the Edward Saganami class, designed primarily to counter the PN’s Mars-class CAs while the Saganami class pays attention to the smaller CAs, CLs and DDs of the PN’s screening and convoy-raiding forces. Although it does not mount as many missile tubes as the Mars, it is tough enough and has sufficient point defense to bear enemy fire until its own superior EW/ECM capabilities (equal to a PN Sultan-class BC) can have the desired effect.
The upgraded EW/ECM and defensive capabilities are made possible by the use of Beta² impeller nodes, which allow it to carry heavier sidewalls and shielding and give it brute impeller strength superior to that of a Mars-class CA–allowing it to tow five RMN-standard missile pods at 500G acceleration, or three pods completely inside the wedge and sidewalls.
Ships of this class are named for bodies of water–bays, lakes, and small seas–with strong naval connections: the lead ship, HMS Jason Bay, is named for the arm of Manticore’s Southern Sea where the Royal Manticoran Naval Academy is located.
