Notes The hull form of the Junction Fortress is a squashed sphere or ellipsoid, with a nominal “equator” 2.325 km from either “pole.” The decks run parallel to the equatorial line, with the nominal “North Pole” being the upward direction created by the fortress’s internal gravity.
The hull makes a fairly sharp “bend” between 1km and 1.25km N/S and becomes nearly flat above/below 2.25km N/S. The bands between 1km and 1.25km N/S are called the “Subtropics” by the personnel assigned to these units. Those between 1.25 and 2.25km are the “Temperate Zones.”
(1) Equatorial weapons are equally spaced in the 2km-high Tropical Belt around the circumference of the fortress, extending 1km north and south from the nominal equator. They are divided into six 60-degree-wide “sectors” for purposes of organization and control.
(2) Polar weapons are mounted on the “polar caps” of the fortress — the band between 1.25km and 2.25km north and south from the equator.
(3) The “equatorial” PCL launch bays are located in the “Subtropical” belts, with two per sector; one each in the “Northern” and “Southern” Subtropics. Each of these bays can hold a 12-ship squadron of Type 1 “Old Style” Light Attack Craft in ready-to-launch positions, with an additional 8 craft in the Service Slips. These bays have never been fully utilized. As work crews, parts, and new craft become available, these PCL launch bays are being refit to hold and launch Type 3 Shrike LACs and similar models. Each main bay will have service/launch bays for an eight-ship squadron plus a large service/storage bay which will be able to accommodate other normal-space craft of up to 150,000 tons total mass/displacement
(4) Parasite craft other than LACs are stored and serviced in standard boat bays immediately adjacent to the PCL bays. As originally constructed, these bays accommodate up to 150,000 tons total mass/displacement of parasite craft. After the refit for new-model PCLs is complete, the capacity of these bays will be reduced to 100,000 tons total mass/displacement.
(5) The acceleration figure shown is based on a posting by David Weber at Baen's Bar which corrected the mass range for the 1G drop-off for ships/constructs in excess of 8,500,000 tons. This posting is no longer on the board; those who are interested may e-mail me for the text.
