We are gratified by the growing interest in Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) that is burgeoning within the international development, human-computer interaction and learning sciences communities since 2007.*

The present state of affairs is a far cry from the early 2000's. When we began to work on ICTD research back then, there were no major academic venues for us to publish our work. With co-conspirators in other institutions, we raised the visibility of HCI4D as a legitimate area of research. We continue to support this growth through the community service listed below, especially as organizers, program committee members and reviewers on major journals and academic conferences. It thus demands tremendous perseverance, risk-taking and personal sacrifices to be a pioneer in an emerging area.

For the next stage, we see a larger impediment towards ICTD research generating larger-scale real-world impact: even as we observe ICTD mushrooming within the above communities, differences in values continue to impede dialogue across communities. We feel that the communities have a lot to learn from one another, and must, if we are to make meaningful progress in the highly challenging endeavor of global development. It is with this goal of "mainstreaming" ICTD among international development actors and social entrepreneurs that we have been giving invited talks at these venues and performing related community service.
