Understanding "What Is Scientology?"
Chapter 31: Those Who Oppose Scientology
Summary
This chapter discusses Scientology[tm]'s fight with a number
of organizations, including the American Medical Association, the
American Psychiatric Association, the Food and Drug Administration,
the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
and Interpol (to name a few).
Criticisms of Scientology[tm] are ultimately
blamed on psychiatrists.
The chapter includes an
allegation that the murderer of Scientology[tm] official William Fisk in 1963
was an agent of the FDA. "The FDA's fingerprints were
figuratively all over the handgun," says the text.

- The official Scientology[tm] site has updated text
and illustrations for chapter 31.
This chapter appears
in several sections, and in the print edition closes with Hubbard's
"The True Story of Scientology".
Text for groups which Scientology[tm] has come to peace
with has been toned down. The new text, for instance, no longer mentions an
alleged link between Interpol and the Nazis.

- Paulette Cooper, in
a chapter from The Scandal of Scientology, says
that in the Fisk murder trial, it came out that Fisk had had an affair
with the murderer's wife, leading to a divorce suit the day before the murder.
(The Scientology[tm] text does mention that the murderer claimed
that Fisk was "attempting to seduce his wife", but omits any mention of the
affair or the divorce suit,
preferring to make allegations about the FDA instead.)
- Scientology[tm]'s is now fighting opponents on the Internet
with a variety of tactics. Ron Newman's
The Church of Scientology vs. The Net page describes the
major incidents.
- Marina Chong's A.R.S. Web Page Summary
includes pointers to many Web pages put up by critic, as
well as some pro-Scientology[tm] pages.
- Ron Newman also has a page linking to accounts of
Scientology harassment of non-Internet critics.
It hasn't been updated in a while, but contains reports
of numerous incidents from the 70s through 1995.
