How does it work???

The Computer Numerically Controlled milling machine is a milling station that utilize a computerized interface to control the movement of drill or milling bits. After inputting the commands for milling a certain part in a special NC file, the milling will be automatically carried out at the click of a button.

The CNC milling machine in Hamburg hall is a Benchman VMC 4000 and is capable of shaping a part with milling bits on 4 axes and a tolerance of ± 0.0004".

To actually create a part here in Carnegie Mellon University. the converted NC file must be submitted to the people who operate the milling machines. If the machine in Hamburg hall is your choice, files can be submitted to Mike Vandeweghe. After an appointment is made, he will gladly go over your file and mill your part. Stock material used to mill the parts can also be ordered through several methods.

The process of converting the design into something the CNC machine would understand will be explained on the design to manufacturing page.
