Abstract

Mr. Tomato Head is a concept for a children’s museum exhibit where different pieces are molded using paraffin as the cast material. The goal of this exhibit is to help children learn about the molding process and the assembly of parts, while allowing them to have fun. Children will learn about the molding process by pouring liquid paraffin into pre-made molds (one for each part), waiting for the paraffin to harden, and creating each part. Different parts include the face, nose, and ears of Mr. Tomato Head as well as accessories such as sunglasses, mustache, and a hat. Then each child will be able to assemble the molded parts together for form their own Mr. Tomato Head. By doing this, the children will be able to learn about the molding process and be able to assemble their own ideas through a variety of options.

Goals

-         Help children learn about basic molding techniques

-         Demonstrate that molding is a process that allows for easy replication and its real world application in terms of mass production

-         Teach children about the assembly process by showing them how each part of Mr. Tomato Head fits together to create the entire body
