![]() This exercise was to create an egg carrier that can hold 3 eggs safely when dropped from 5 feet above ground. In addition to keeping the 3 eggs safe, it must be environmentally conscious. I first thought about which material to use in order to minimize environmental impact. Among many other materials, the bets choice for me was to use cardboard which is already recycled paper, and can be recycled again. Communication Since it was an individual excercise, communication was not critical. Problem Solving With the material decided, it was time to think about how to protect the eggs. I first thought about the property of egg and its strength. I knew that it is very hard to break an egg vertically(the longer axel),but easy to break sideways(shorter axel). This means that an egg will be able to withstand the impact from dropping if the egg is landed vertically, but won't be able to withstand the impact if landed sideways. So inside the box I made of cardboard, there is a part also made of cardboard which moves freely sideways, thus absorbing impact from dropping to ground. Without testing I knew my design will keep the eggs safe from dropping because I have carefully thought about the property of an egg and designed it. Team Work Since it was an individual excercise, there was no team work involved. Self and Team Evaluation I think my design solved the problem very well function-wise. I kept all three eggs from breaking with dropped from 5 feet above ground, and it is made of cardboard which is recycled and can be recycled again after its use as egg carrier. Knowledge About Rapid Prototyping Technologies I have learned that when prototyping a design, it is very important to consider the purpose of the project. And it is also important to think about properties of materials used to maximize benefits of using the particular materials. |
