Making STL files in AutoCAD 13

Step 1: Open file within AutoCAD 13. Make sure that the object that will be made the .stl file is in the positive xyz axis. This is very important because if it isn't the file will not be made correctly. To determine if the object is in the positive xyz axis, look at the coordinate points located on the bottom left-hand corner of the drawing window. Use the Right, Left, Front, and Plan views to move the object into the appropriate place.

Step 2: At the Command prompt (bottom part of the screen) type stlout .

Step 3:A message in the command prompt will read, "Select object". Choose the object of which you wish to make the STL file. STL files can be made only from one object at a time. Therefore, make sure that you have combined all of the objects in your 3-D model that you wish to be made as an STL file before you create the STL file. (This is under the Toolbar, Modify. Click on the dynamite and choose the two filled in circle in the pull-down menu.) Just press Esc if you have not done so before this step.

Step 4:In the command prompt a message will read, "Create STL file as binary (Y)". Type n . This will create the file as ASCII.

Step 5: A pop-up window will appear similar to a Save As pop-up window. Change the directory to c:/silver/drw and save file as any name you wish. It is important to save the file in this directory because once in JP System 5 there is no option to change the directory to find your file as there is in Word.

Be sure that when you create a 3-D model in any CAD applications that you use English (or Engineering) units, that is, feet and inches. JP System 5 is set to measure the volume and area of the object in these units. For example, if you create your .stl file and it is 3 cm wide, JP System will interpret this as 3 in. wide. Use English units to avoid the hassle of having to rescale your object in your CAD program.
