AI for Teachers Workshop

SCS will offer a weeklong workshop, "Crash Course in Artificial Intelligence," June 17-21, 2024, along with a Learning Material Design session to support high school educators who want to gain familiarity with AI and offer AI-related educational activities for their students. The workshop will cover an introduction to a broad range of artificial intelligence topics including machine learning, deep learning, search algorithms, information retrieval and recommender systems.

AI Scholars Summer Camp

AI Scholars summer Pre-College program at CMU will take a deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on research projects, faculty lectures, and industry engagement with leading tech companies around the country. As an AI Scholar you will engage in college-level courses, as well as weekly seminars that explore college admissions, financial aid, building independence, mental health, emotional wellness and more. You will have the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with peers and mentors while being fully immersed in the college experience.

Course Materials: Demystifying AI

This course at CMU will pull back the curtains on artificial intelligence, helping you learn what it is, what it can do, how to use it, how it works, and what can go wrong. This course is designed for students that want to learn about AI and machine learning but don't have the math and computing background required for full-fledged intro AI and ML courses. Leveraging high school algebra and basic Python programming skills, we'll help you implement key pieces of AI techniques from the nearest neighbor algorithm to simple neural networks. Through in-class activities, weekly recitations, and course assignments, you'll start to learn how to use AI systems, including how to make them "intelligent", what data might be needed, and what can go wrong. Ethical discussions will be woven throughout the course to enable you to think critically about how AI impacts our society.

Curriculum Developers: Christine Nguyen and Pat Virtue

Since 2019, Christine and Pat have been combining the educational and AI expertise of the Boys and Girls Club and Carnegie Mellon University to design, build, and run Artificial Intelligence summer camps and after-school programs for teens.
