Auramkil in 579
Field observations

The party took a short trip to Auramkil at the insistence of the
grey elves in AK 579, where they
learned:
- The Elite Guard was still in
charge of the passes through the mountains and used charmed monsters
to help defend their outposts.

- The Nirduk clan was clearly a force
to be reckoned with. Common folk in the area between the mountains
and the city feared them and were very obsequious around them; there
were some hints that the clan was extracting protection money from
them. Other people (such as the highway robbers the party
encountered) utterly despised them. The Nirduks were in charge of the
guardposts around the capital itself.

- Since the remains of the Empire were supposedly civilized, killing
people brought down the wrath of the authorities. Highway robberies
and similar encounters were carried out with nonlethal attacks; once
one side was subdued, magic items would change hands, and the parties
would continue on their way. (Fortunately, the robbers that beset the
party were smart enough to surrender when they figured out that we
didn't know the local customs and were actually trying to kill
them.)

- Some high elven magic/tech (such as the extradimensional tunnel
network that was used to spirit the party out of a Nirduk guardpost)
bears a strong similarity to drow magic/tech (such as the capsella
network housing one of the seven gates to the drow plane).

- The government was detaining a number of political prisoners,
including Demos Remen.
