The first step in making a part is the design. When you have finalized your design, make a technical drawing of the part. The technical drawing should include all of the dimensions and tolerances for the part. Also, include the type of material the part should be made out of.

The next step in the process is to obtain stock for the part. This can be done in a number of ways. There are many places that sell stock, from online stores to local stores. It is a good idea to get a quote from a number of different places, especially if the material is expensive. Be sure to factor in shipping charges if you have to order the material.

Now it is time to actually make the part. You should only try to make your own part if you are knowledgeable in how to operate a lathe safely. It is a very good idea to create a plan of attack before starting your part. Plan out the different steps you are going to take to make the finished part. After you have a plan, all that is left is to execute it.
