Private History of an INWO Game

This is a history of the beginning of an online game of Illuminati: New World Order. This is the private history of the game, with the details of every card that players had in their hand, and every conspiracy that they remembered to show me. After some thought, I've put the private details into their own links, so that if you don't follow the links, you'll see the public history, but the private history is available.

This trial game was played with decks that I had seen posted on the INWO list by Nick Gaut some months ago, with the assertion that the decks were reasonably balanced against each other. There were five players in the game, playing in the following order. I've added links to the decks each played.

Ralph Melton (ralph@cs.cmu.edu) served as moderator and coordinator for the game. The word I in this document refers to Ralph.

The links for the names of cards look up the cards in Wendell Hicken's Card List Generator.

The game was played by Pittsburgh House Rules.

Beginning of Game

Reveal Illuminati

All players revealed their Illuminati simultaneously:

Draw Initial Plot Cards

Most of the players had decided on their lead puppet without needing to look at their initial plot cards. Even so, each person drew three plots before the lead puppets were revealed.

Reveal Lead Puppets

These were the lead puppets that were revealed. The Nuclear Power Companies were extremely popular for their action-cancelling ability.

Don Fnordlioni, Steve Hatherley, and Glen Barnett all bounced on their lead. (Glen declared that this had been his intention, to try to make someone else bounce on the NPCs.) Those three players set aside their copies of the Nuclear Power Companies, and selected other lead puppets. These were revealed simultaneously:

There were no conflicts on this second phase of lead puppets.

Drawing Group Cards

All players shuffled their Group decks and then drew six Group cards. Don Fnordlioni, Steve, and Glen then put their Nuclear Power Companies cards back in their deck and re-shuffled, so that those NPCs cards couldn't be in their first six Group cards. (Doing this shuffling was much easier to do electronically than it would have been with real cards.)

Deciding Who Goes First

We decided by a random process that Jason would go first. In a live game, we would do so by rolling dice; because this was an electronic game, it was decided by Ralph doing a random selection.

First Round

Jason's First Turn

Jason's power structure at the beginning of the turn:

Adepts of Hermes ( )
	1: Religious Reich ( )
		1:
		2:
	2:
	3:
	4:

(We decided to dismiss with the exact location of control arrows early on, since that information wasn't available in our online references, and didn't seem to be a great imbalance to the game.)

Jason drew a Plot card and a Group card. (His hand)

His automatic takeover was the Templars, off of the Adepts of Hermes.

He took Action tokens on all three of his groups.

His first action was to play Grassroots Support on the Religious Reich, spending their action token to do so. This had the effect of raising the power of the Religious Reich permanently to 6.

Adepts of Hermes attack to control the Great Pyramid

Jason declared an attack by the Adepts of Hermes upon the Great Pyramid that he had in his hand. The Adepts' power was 7, +6 on any attempt to control any Magic Group, which applies since the Great Pyramids have the Magic Attribute. The resistance of the Great Pyramid was 4. The net roll, therefore, is 7 (power of the attacking group) - 4 (Resistance of the group under attack) + 6 (Bonus to attack Magic groups) = 9 or less.

Jason decided that that was a good enough roll, so he did not involve any more groups. No other players could interfere with the attack, because it was Jason's first turn.

Jason rolled the dice. He rolled an 8. The attack was a success. The Great Pyramid was now controlled by the Adepts of Hermes, since they were the group that led the attack.

Jason then knocked to signal the end of his turn. Play passed to Don Fnordlioni.

Don Fnordlioni drew a Plot and a Group Card. (His hand). He showed Jason the Plot card he drew, because Jason had the Great Pyramid.

Don Fnordlioni made an automatic takeover of England onto the Bavarian Illuminati.

Don Fnordlioni used his first token from England to play Emergency Powers on England, raising its power to 6.

Bavarian Illuminati attacks to control the Pentagon

The Bavarian Illuminati attacked to control the Pentagon, with England using its second action token to aid in the attack. (England could aid with its full power because it had a common alignment of Government with the Pentagon.) The roll was a 10 (Bavarian Illuminati's power) + 6 (England's power) - 6 (Resistance of the Pentagon) = 10 or less.

Don Fnordlioni rolled a 12, which was an automatic failure. This attack failed.

Don Fnordlioni chose to knock, since Japan would have no chance of taking over the Pentagon successfully. He discarded the Pentagon card, since he had not succeeded in taking it over by the end of his turn.

Steve draws a Plot card and a Group card, showing the Plot to Jason. (his hand)

Steve's automatic takeover is the I.R.S.. He takes action tokens.

The Discordian Society attacks to control the Gay Activists.

The Discordian Society, aided by the I.R.S., attacks to control the Gay Activists. The I.R.S. can only aid with its Global Power, since it does not have an alignment in common with the Gay Activists. The roll is a 7 (Power of the Discordian Society) + 4 (Any attempt bonus to control Weird Groups) + 3 (Global power of the I.R.S.) - 3 (Resistance of the Gay Activists) = 11.

The roll was an 7, a success. The Discordian Society assumed control of the Gay Activists.

Steve then knocked, with an action token on the Supreme Court.

The Network ( )

	3:
	4:

Sherlock should have drawn two Plot cards, since he was playing the Network. However, we all forgot that, and he only drew one plot card, showing it to Jason because of the Great Pyramid, and one Group card. (His hand).

Sherlock ATO'ed Silicon Valley off of the Network.

Network, aided by the N.S.A., attacks to control the F.B.I.

The Network, aided by the N.S.A., attacked to control the F.B.I. from Sherlock's hand. The roll was a 8 (power of the Network) + 5 (regular power of the N.S.A.) -6 (Resistance of the F.B.I. = 7 or less. Sherlock decided to roll it.

He rolled a 5, a success. The Network assumed control of the F.B.I.

Sherlock then knocked. His power structure at the end of his turn:

Glen Barnett's First Turn

Glen's power structure at the beginning of his turn:

Bermuda Triangle ( )
	1: Big Media ( )
		1:
		2:
		3:
	2:
	3:
	4:

Glen drew his usual Plot and Group, showing the first plot to Jason as usual. (His Hand)

Glen's automatic takeover was California, which gave +1 power to all his Media groups.

Bermuda Triangle attacks to control Cable TV

The Bermuda Triangle, acting alone, attacked to control Cable TV from Glen's hand. The roll was 8 (Bermuda Triangle's power) +4 (Big Media's +4 on any attack on a Media Group) - 2 (Resistance of Cable TV) = 10 or less.

Glen rolled a 2. There is no automatic success, the way that there is automatic failure on an 11 or 12, but this was still well below the required roll. The Bermuda Triangle now controlled Cable TV.

Big Media, aided by California, attacks to control Princess Di

Big Media attacked to control Princess Di, with the aid of California. The required roll was 5 (Big Media's normal power of 4, +1 for California's power boost to Media groups) + 4 (Common alignment of Liberal) + 4 (Common alignment of Straight) + 5 (California's regular power) -5 (Resistance of Princess Di) = 13 or less.

Glen rolled a 4, another success. Big Media controlled Princess Di.

Glen then used the special power of the Bermuda Triangle to rearrange his power structure at the end of his turn. He moved Princess Di from Big Media to the Bermuda Triangle, so that all of the groups he controlled were next to the Bermuda Triangle, for greater defensive potential.

Glen then knocked. His power structure at the end of his turn:

Bermuda Triangle ( )
	1: Big Media ( ) Power 6/4 (+1 Power for California,
                                    +1 for Princess Di)

Jason's Second Turn

Jason's power structure at the beginning of his turn:

Adepts of Hermes ( )
1: Religious Reich ( ) Power 6, Linked to Grassroots Support
		1:
		2:
	2: Templars (*)
		1:
	3: Great Pyramid ( )
		1:
	4:

At the beginning of his turn, Jason played An Offer You Can't Refuse, forfeiting his chance to draw any Group cards that turn in order to draw a plot from the decks of Don Fnordlioni and Sherlock. (His hand). (Don Fnordlioni and Sherlock each got to see the card Jason took from their deck, because of the meta-rule that says cards can never be taken from you without your knowing what was taken.)

Jason made an Automatic Takeover of the Cattle Mutilators, took action tokens, and said, "Okay, folks... who wants to barter for a savior?"

Jason spent an Illuminati action to make an automatic takeover of the resource Soulburner.

The Religious Reich attacks to control George Bush

The Religious Reich made an attempt to control George Bush from Jason's hand. There was a common alignment of Straight; there was no common alignment of Conservative, because the FAQ states that George Bush is not conservative until he is part of some Power Structure. The initial roll was 6 (Power of Religious Reich) + 4 (Common alignment of Straight) - 3 (Resistance of George Bush) = 7 or less.

Don Fnordlioni decided to oppose the attack with Japan, mostly because the Don was about to have his turn, and he would not be able to do anything else with that single token. Japan interceded with its Global Power of 4, bringing the required roll down to a 3 or less. At this time, players started giving real-world stories to their actions. In Don Fnordlioni's words:

Don Fnordlioni: Because those nefarious wizards deigned to steal one of my precious plots (a yellow NWO, as a matter of fact), the Bavarian Illuminati secretly poisons George Bush's dinner while the former president is visiting the Tokyo elite. However, being under the magical protection of Hermetic agents, Bush manages to survive the assassination attempt by immediately expelling the tainted fish -- but makes a fool of himself in the process (he got some on his hosts). Embarrassed and enraged, Japanese dignataries vow to have their revenge on their ill-mannered gaijin guest, and launch a global effort to block Bush's ascention to power as a member of the Hermetic Order.

Jason countered to use the 2 points Global Power of the Great Pyramid to bring the roll up to a 5 or less.

Jason: When Egypt hears of Japan's attempt to thwart the plans of their great secret masters, they send out King tut himself to assist in the capturing and compliance of Mr. Bush.

Jason also spent the Action Token of the Cattle Mutilators to expose Don Fnordlioni's plots:

Jason: Also outraged by this attack, the Cattle Mutilators plot quietly with the Templars and attack, striking at the very heart of the Bavarian Think Tank.

Don Fnordlioni's response:

Don Fnordlioni: Nothing I can do about either of these actions.

Err, excuse me. The Bavarian Illuminati deigns not to do anything about the Adept's insolance, as they are playing right into our hands!

Jason then used the Templars' Action Token to force Don Fnordlioni to discard the Seize the Time.

Jason: As the Templars rummage through and mess up the Bavarian Think Tank, they notice some strange and bizarre time control devices. Infuriated with this, they promptly smash the time machine to pieces.

Jason then played New World Order: Don't Forget to Smash the State in order to reduce Japan's Power to 3 and thereby also reduce Japan's Global Power to 3. This was actually counterproductive for Jason's purpose, because it also reduced the power of the Religious Reich by 2, changing the roll to 4 (Power of the Religious Reich) + 4 (Common alignment of Straight) - 3 (Resistance of George Bush) - 3 (Global Power of Japan) + 2 (Global Power of The Great Pyramid) = 4 or less. NWO: Don't Forget to Smash the State also had the effect of reducing the power of the Supreme Court and Princess Di to 0, causing them to lose their action tokens and not get new ones.

Jason: The Adepts, seeing an ideal weakness in the govermental structure of Japan, strike again, sending their minions in to smash the govermental structure to pieces.

At this point, Jason tried to play a Tidal Wave on Japan.

Jason: The Adepts are just fed up with those annoying Japanese people. Summoning up all of their might and magic, they conjure up a Tidal Wave and send it smashing down on the unsuspecting Japanese.
This, however, got rejected by the moderator, who pointed out the section of the rules that says that you cannot make an attack (including a Disaster) during another attack.

The only player with any action tokens left to help Jason's attack was Sherlock, who had an action token on Silicon Valley. Jason said: "I'm pretty sure Sherlock isn't happy with me right now..:) but guys..please...help!..*grins*"

This was apparently enough to coax Sherlock to spend the two points of global power to bring the roll up to a 6 or less.

Sherlock: Forgetting past enmities, Silicon Valley posts some messages complimentary to the Order in some newsgroups where George might "accidentally" come across it.

After also pointing out the illegality of playing the Tidal Wave during the attack, Don Fnordlioni went on to hint, "By the way, the Tidal Wave would probably be much more effective against that ol' Silicon Valley.... " (This was not actually a true statement, since Japan and Silicon Valley had equal power at that time, and would be equally likely to be Devastated or Destroyed by the Tidal Wave.)

Jason responded, "I don't want to 'destroy' Japan...that makes it to hard for Sherlock to get..*evil grin* "

At this point, as a result of previous private negotiations, Steve gave Don Fnordlioni a group card from his hand, in exchange for the exposed Hidden Influence from Don Fnordlioni.

After all this action, Jason finally rolled the dice. He rolled a 5, and successfully took control of George Bush. My, this was a lot of fuss over a power-0 group.

Jason's final words before knocking: "My thanks to the Network for their assistance. The Adepts will remember them.

"I do sense, however, some reluctance on the behalf of the other mystical group to assist in any way, and will warn them that they are being watched...very very closely...*cackle*"

Jason knocked, and play passed to Don Fnordlioni.

Jason's power structure at the end of his turn, with the power modifications due to NWO: Don't Forget to Smash the State noted:

Exposed plots:
Slush Fund

Don Fnordlioni drew a Plot card and a Group card, showing the Plot card to Jason because Jason owned the Great Pyramid. (His hand)

Don Fnordlioni made an automatic takeover of the Multinational Oil onto the Bavarian Illuminati. He took action tokens.

The Bavarian Illuminati attacks to destroy the Templars

Don Fnordlioni declared an attack by the Bavarian Illuminati to destroy the Templars. (The reason that he didn't involve any of his other groups was that the Templars are Secret, and a non-Secret group cannot attack a Secret Group.) He also used the special ability of the Bavarian Illuminati to declare his attack Privileged.

Since this was an attack to destroy, its chance of success was calculated by subtracting the Power, not the Resistance, of the Templars from the power of the Bavarian Illuminati.

Don Fnordlioni played his copy of the Templars as a Hidden Agents card to give +10 to the attack. The roll was 10 (Power of the Bavarian Illuminati) + 10 (Agents for the Templars) -3 (Power of the Templars) -10 (Proximity of the Templars to the Illuminati that controls them) = 7 or less.

Don Fnordlioni: Those nefarious Bavarians (who FOUNDED the Templars in antiquity) activate their long-time moles in the Templar leadership. And only these select few truly understand the ramifactions of the Omega Plan....

The Don also said, "By the by, anyone who got rid of the NWO:DFtStS [Don't Forget to Smash the State] would find themselves in my favor..." This was not relevant at the moment, since nobody other than Don Fnordlioni or Jason could play a plot during the Privileged Attack.

Jason could do nothing to defend himself.

Jason: The Adepts, confident that they will be able to squash these free thinking Agents within their midsts, sit back and wait for the attack.

Don Fnordlioni rolled the dice. He rolled an 11, an automatic failure. What bad luck.

Jason: The Adepts cackle evily as they flush out the evil agents.

Don Fnordlioni then played a Dictatorship on England, using one of its Action Tokens for the purpose.

Don Fnordlioni: Much to the bereavement of the Britons, however, the Queen Mother (a high-ranking Templar herself) passed away as the dark magicks keeping her alive cease to function, and Prince Edward (not Charles, as suspected) is installed as the King of England.... Parliament is dissolved, mass arrests and beheadings soon follow....

Jason then interrupted Don Fnordlioni's turn to play NWO: Energy Crisis.

Jason: The Adepts, tired of the feeble attempts by the so-called 'Bavarian Illuminati', Strike a blow into the center of the whole world by cutting of major supplies of power and fuel, causing an 'energy crisis'.

Jason plays a Tidal Wave on Silicon Valley

Jason then played his Tidal Wave on Sherlock's Silicon Valley.

Jason: In a attempt to protect their future and after totally humiliating the Pyramid people, [the Adepts] decide to turn their attentions to another possible threat... the Network. Using their combined might, they summon up a HUGE Tidal wave and strike down into the Center of California.. specifically... the Silicon Valley.

The roll required was 24 (Power of the Tidal Wave) - 3 (Power of Silicon Valley) - 10 (Proximity to the Illuminati) = 11 or less.

Sherlock did nothing, so Jason rolled the dice. He rolled an 11, another automatic failure.

Don Fnordlioni knocked; play passed to Steve Hatherley.

At the beginning of his turn, Steve used the I.R.S. to tax Jason for the top card of his deck (showing it to Jason, because of the meta-rules). He also drew his usual Plot (showing it to Jason because of the Great Pyramid) and Group card. (His hand)

Steve made an automatic takeover of W.I.T.C.H. to Discordia, and then took action tokens. The Supreme Court did not get an action token, because its power was reduced to 0.

Steve then knocked. Play passed to Sherlock. Steve replaced the Hidden Influence and another Plot card about a third of the way down in his deck, in order to satisfy the requirement that he could have at most five Plot cards in his hand when it was not his turn.

Sherlock drew a Plot card (showing it to Jason) and a Group card. (His hand)

Sherlock made an automatic takeover of the Robot Sea Monsters and took action tokens.

Silicon Valley attacks to destroy the Great Pyramid

Sherlock declared an attack by Silicon Valley, with an Infobahn, on the Great Pyramid, with the aid of the F.B.I. At that point, the roll was a 3 (Power of Silicon Valley) + 10 (because of the Infobahn) - 2 (Power of the Great Pyramid) - 10 (Proximity of the Great Pyramid to the Adepts of Hermes) + 2 (Global Power of the F.B.I.) = 3 or less.

(Note: We all forgot that the Power of the F.B.I. was reduced to 1 by NWO: Don't Forget to Smash the State, and therefore its Global Power was reduced as well. The roll should have been a 2 or less instead of a 3 or less; fortunately, this did not affect the outcome. If it had affected the outcome, we would have played by the outcome that we thought was correct based on the mistaken rule. This is known as the "Whoops! Rule".)

Jason declined to defend himself, particularly since he had no action tokens with which to do so, but he did provide some color text, since Sherlock had been too tired to do so:

Jason: The Electronic Network, after careful research and exploring, have determined that the Adepts are to blame for the attempt on their Chip Providers. Undaunted, they strike back, unleashing a deadly force of electronic attacks and undercover agents supplied by their cohorts at the F.B.I.. Their target: Egypt, and its magical pyramids.

The Pyramids, still recovering from the magic they used to send the Tidal wave, are unable to provide much of a defense and rely totally on the Adepts for their defensive support.

Sherlock rolled a 7, which would have failed.

Sherlock then played a Bribery, spending the action of the Network to do so, to change the die roll retroactively to a 2.

Sherlock:The Network shifts again after the attack against the Adepts is, seemingly over. By moving various amounts of money through various hands, the Great Pyramids, having stood for thousands of years, are instead repaved into a new computer super-lab.
Jason: The Adepts scream loudly and watch in horror as their great pyramids, the great structures of might and magic, go tumbling down to the earth.

"We swear, by the secret masters themselves, that we will have our revenge!"

Since Jason owned Soulburner and had just had a group destroyed by a rival, he had the option of taking two plots from Sherlock's deck, or to expose all the cards in Sherlock's hand and force Sherlock to discard one. He chose to draw two Plots from Sherlock's deck (showing them to Sherlock).

Jason: The Adepts scream as the Pyramids get a new silicon coating, However, they are undaunted. Using covert spies, they sneak into the enemy compound and steal some of their ideas.

Sherlock knocks. Play passes to Glen. Sherlock's power structure:

	4: Princess Di ( ) Power 0 (-2 for NWO: Don't Forget...)
		1:

Glen drew a Plot and a Group, without needing to show the Plot to Jason any longer. (His hand)

Glen made an automatic takeover of OPEC off of Big Media, and rolled for OPEC's power. He rolled a 7; OPEC's power was a 5 until the beginning of Glen's next turn.

Glen: The Secret Masters use their influence to have Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black and Ted Turner co-chair the next OPEC meeting.

Glen took action tokens. Princess Di did not get an action token.

Don Fnordlioni gave Glen his exposed Slush Fund.

OPEC attacks to destroy the Religious Reich

OPEC, with the Slush Fund, declared an attack to destroy the Religious Reich, with the aid of Big Media.

Glen: An organisation of oil exporting nations, taking money from an unexpected source, fund an attack on a group of bible-thumping infidels. The newspaper editorials report it as a blow for disestablishmentarianism and religious freedom, giving it their full support.

Because this was an attack to destroy, the effect of common and opposite alignments was reversed, and there was a penalty of -4 to the attack because of the common alignment of Conservative between OPEC and the Religious Reich. The roll started at a 5 (Power of OPEC) + 10 (Slush Fund) + 4 (Power of Big Media) - 4 (Common alignment of Conservative) - 4 (Power of Religious Reich) - 10 (Proximity of Religious Reich to the Adepts of Hermes) = 1 or less.

Jason reacted by playing a Just Say No to increase the power of the Religious Reich in defense. This brought the roll down by 10, to -9 or less.

Jason: The Adepts, furious at the continued assault against their mighty followers, join in the fight to 'Just Say No'

Don Fnordlioni threw all of his groups into the attack, in turn. Japan contributed its Global Power of 3, the Multinational Oil Companies contributed their Global Power of 4, and England contributed its Global Power of 2, bringing the roll up to a 0 or less.

Steve Hatherley committed the I.R.S. to the attack, using their current Global Power of 2, bringing it to a 2 or less.

Steve: The IRS consults its books and discovers creative new ways to tax the Religious Reich.

Steve also commented that if Glen had given him forewarning, he could have used the Gay Activists to reverse one of the Conservative alignments of OPEC or the Religious Reich, turning a -4 penalty into a +4 bonus. However, the Gay Activists cannot use their special power during an attack.

Glen threw California's power of 2 into the fray, bringing the roll up to a 4 or less.

Glen: California holds a Love-in-against-the-Reich, "just like Mom and Dad used to do".

Glen then decided to go for broke, and threw in the Global Power 3 of the Cable TV, bringing the roll to a 7 or less.

Glen: Cable TV dedicates a whole channel to 24 hour programming explaining the evils of the Religious Reich, and exposing various infidelities of its leaders.

(Personally, I find it implausible that you could do enough exposes to achieve a full coverage of the Religious Reich in only 24 hours a day, but this is fiction...)

Steve Hatherley was then moved to aid the attack even more by adding the Power of the Gay Activists, bringing the roll up to a 9 or less.

Steve: Nevertheless, the Gay Activists are swayed by the persuasivness of Cable TV's arguments and 'out' a number of significant Religious Reich officials,

Before the dice were rolled, Glen passed two plots to Don Fnordlioni.

Glen rolled the dice at last. He rolled a 3. The Religious Reich was destroyed, and George Bush returned to Jason's hand.

Soulburner came into effect; Jason chose to draw two plots from Glen's deck.

Glen then knocked. Play would have passed to Jason, but we ended the game. Glen's power structure:
