Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT)
eBusiness Technology


Beginning in Fall 2004, full-time and
part-time classes will be offered
at Carnegie Mellon (Pittsburgh, PA)
and at Carnegie Mellon West campus (Moffett Field, CA).

Carnegie Mellon's eBusiness technology program of study prepares students to play a variety of mission-critical roles in leveraging the power of technology along with preparing students to provide technical leadership and an informed strategic vision. Instead of separate courses, the entire program consists of an integrated series of projects designed to help students acquire and practice the essential skills and knowledge that they will use upon graduation. Expert mentors are always available to provide advice, guidance, feedback, and one-on-one coaching.

Students take on the role of a newly-formed eBusiness taskforce at Moffett Foods, a fictional company with real-world problems. The student's mission is to help Moffett Foods leverage eBusiness technology across the enterprise. But, there is a long road ahead - Moffett is in the dark ages technologically, with only a simple web presence. Some of the projects that students tackle include:

  • Creating a business case for ebusiness technology within Moffett Foods
  • Reengineering the Moffett Foods' website to make it easier to find on search engines
  • Designing, building, and evaluating a highly-usable website
  • Building the system and database design models
  • Evaluating and selecting an ISP to host the site
  • Designing an electronic self-paying invoice system
  • Designing a mobile realtime, Available-To-Promise order entry system for cellular phones
  • Using data mining techniques to identify products to sell
This program spans one calendar year for full-time students, 2 calendar years for part-time students. The final semester for full-time students (or final 2 semesters for part-time students) is devoted to an in-depth practicum where students apply the skills mastered to a real-world problem. Often these practicum projects are done in close collaboration with area companies, giving students an inside perspective of how the technology is used.


Masters of Science in Electronic Commerce (MSEC)
Mastering Business Technologies

Carnegie Mellon's Master of Science in Electronic Commerce (MSEC) program prepares tomorrow's business leaders to harness the full force of information technologies. The interdisciplinary program combines the strengths of two top ranked graduate schools: the School of Computer Science and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration

The curriculum is evenly divided between business and computer science courses. Students learn business fundamentals (marketing, strategy, finance, accounting, statistics, and economics) and emerging business concepts (Internet marketing, supply chain management, data mining, and cyber law) as well as leading-edge technologies (Java, web design and architecture, software engineering, networking, mobile computing, security, and human factors).

The capstone course is a 14-week Practicum in which student teams develop solutions to business problems using the latest information technologies. Student teams are presented a real world business problem by industry affiliates such as PPG, Johnson & Johnson, PNC Bank, Diamond Cluster, and IBM. In addition to a comprehensive set of required courses, MSEC students also take several elective courses. Beginning with the MSEC 2004 graduating class, the program will allow students who are in excellent academic standing to take additional elective courses to specialize in IT Strategy, Digital Marketing, E-Commerce Technologies, and Supply Chain. Students can also define other tracks of their interest upon approval from Program Directors.
