I am very interested in computers and spend a fair bit of time with them (most of it through my various projects). I used to play quite a bit of computer games, but due to a lack of time and reduced interest, I barely ever play now (a three year old computer helps, too 8-)) ) However, I still play a few games on my Palm, while I wait in line somewhere 8-)). My favorite genre is adventure games and I loved playing Monkey Island I+II (quite some time ago), Myst and more recently Grim Fandango (I REALLY enjoyed this one!). However, adventure games are very time consuming so that when I don't have much time to spend, I also enjoy playing Car Racing games.

More recently, I have also become interested and knowledgeable about computer hardware. I regularly read web pages like AnandTech and, more importantly Ars Technica. At the same time, I have become more interested in the world of computer business and politics (like AMD vs. Intel, Microsoft vs Linux, Rambus dispute and general computer business). My main resource for that is C|Net, which I receive on my Palm via AvantGo.

Besides all these computer-related interests, I am also very interested in photography. I started a long time ago and I have enjoyed using my first camera, a Canon AE-1. Unfortunately, it was stolen at my boarding school in the US and I switched to the Olympus OM-2. The Canon was a semi automatic time-priority camera (I am not sure this is the correct English term, what I mean is that you set the time and the camera determines the proper f-stop depending on the lighting conditions). At first I figure that a f-stop priority camera would be nicer, since you can take night shots (the camera will just use a long time), however I go to really like f-stop priority, since you always know what the shutter speed is. The OM-2 was a f-stop priority and when I switched, I had quite a few pictures with more motion blur than I wanted. In general, I liked the Canon's handling and "feel" better than the OM-2's. However, last September I finally switched to a digital camera, a Canon Powershot S-100 (aka Digital Elph). I already had most of my pictures taken with the SLR camera's transferred onto Photo CD, but that was quite expensive per picture. I really enjoy the small size of the S-100 and the instant feedback it provides. Foremost though I like it, that I get all my pictures on my computer (thank God I have access to a CD Writer at McGill 8-)) ). Virtually all my pictures taken with the digital camera can be found here: Martin's Digital Camera Page. (I created the script that creates the thumbnail pages myself - pure Unix Shell Scripting 8-)) )

I also enjoy sailing very much. Before I got to the US, I sailed in the Optimist Dinghy. I even participated in regional regattas and did fairly well. However, I what I didn't like very much about the Optimist Dinghy is the fact that you are sailing alone. I enjoy sailing in a team much better. During the summers, I sail with my parents on the Mediterranean Sea on our sailing boat. <to be continued soon>
