I was referring to the old databases that you could not upgrade, like the ones prior to 1-11. I have tried and not succeeded.

The long answer is yes.  But, you have to keep in mind that all of the old databases will not work with the new software and hardware. 

NO!  That is categorically untrue.  The GEMS databases are backwards compatible.  For example, if you have a three year old GEMS 1.13 VIBS database, you can upgrade that database to 1.18 and download it to the latest R6.
