2003/12/12 Geminids

The Pittsburgh sky cleared on Friday night (Dec. 12-13, one day before maximum), and I watched for the Geminids meteor shower from 23:10--0:10 EST. The moon was quite bright. Soon it was obvious that I won't see many meteors. But the forecast was bad for Saturday night when Geminids is predicted to peak so I decided to stay.

Because there were so few meteors, the experience was pretty close to watching a soccer game between Geminids and sporadic meteors. The final score? 8:2 -- not too bad for one hour, including a bright red-yellow sporadic meteor in Aries going from north to south and flashed twice, and two long, fast, bluish Geminids in Taurus going west. All the Geminids were fast, blue and somewhat dim, unlike the slow, bright, yellow ones several years ago. After an hour cold and lack of activity stopped my observation.
