Concept
Ferrofluid Etch-A-Sketch is a toy that allows the user to create shapes using a magnetic field. Using the included magnets, the user can bring it near the ferrofluid and watch as it changes shape. Through this, they will learn about the properties of ferrofluid and are encouraged to find other ways to obtain diffferent magnetic fields.
Physical Principle
This toy is based on the principles of the Non-Newtonian fluid called ferrofluid. Ferrofluid reacts to a magnetic field by solidifying and forming interesting spikes.
Other Technical Details
This toy is safe for most users because it is housed in a strong acrylic case. However, should the container break, ferrofluid can stain skin and clothing and is overall not a particularly friendly substance. The cost to produce such a toy is also very high, as ferrofluid and thick acrylic both cost a lot. This toy, then, is targeted at the high-end of the market, perhaps even for high school or college science classrooms. Barring the enclosure breaking, the toy does not require any additional maintainence.
