The Puzzal is composed of two types of pieces. The first piece is the core. It is a long cylinder which can lock the other pieces into place. At one end of the core is a rubber piece that comprises a piece of the puzzle. The second type of piece is the rest of the puzzle. The different hexagons and pentagons that comprise the completed ball will fall apart when the rubber piece of the core is pressed upon. They are held into the core by a slender rod that locks into the core. When the rubber piece of the core is pressed the lock is released. The Puzzal illustrates the principle of equal and opposite forces. It also helps to develop critical problem solving skills as children attempt to recreate the original ball once it has fallen to pieces.
Children can play with the Puzzal in the same way that they would any other rubber ball. They can throw it, bounce it, catch it, and create a variety of games surrounding these basic operations. The Puzzal, however, adds a new dimension to the classic rubber ball. The puzzle aspect of the ball generates new ideas for games for children or simply for something to pass the time that also helps develop the mind.
The construction of the Puzzal would require the creation of a the plastic core and rods that comprise the center of the Puzzal. The core and the rods would then need to have the rubber hexagons and pentagons attached in such a manner as to create the "soccer ball" shape. The durability of the Puzzal would depend entirely on the core and the plastic rods. The Puzzal would not function correctly if either of those were damaged. It is recomended that the Puzzal plastic components be built out of high quality plastic that will resist most deformations.
There are almost no safety concerns with the Puzzal. There are no small parts, no magnets, and no projectiles. The only safety concern is that a child might attempt to swallow the individual pieces; however it is likely that if the child is old enough for that piece to fit in their mouth, then they are also old enough to know not to attempt to swallow the toy.
