Make the Activity
Materials needed (for class):
1 pack 5” x 8” index cards
1 pack 3 oz Dixie cups
1 pack Coffee stirring straws
1 pack Bending straws
2 rolls Scotch tape
1 Single hole puncher
1 pack Balloons (20)
7 Scissors
Procedure for students:
1. Punch holes in the four corners of the notecard, approximately 1cm in from each side. Then, fold the two sides in approximately 1 inch.

2. Make 1cm slits in the stirring straws at both ends. Cut out the bottom of a dixie cup for a wheel. Split the straw at the slit and tape this to the cup-wheel. Repeat for the other axel.

3. Thread the axel through two of the holes and repeat step 2 for the other wheel. Repeat for the other axel. Then, tape the balloon tightly to the straw.

4. Tape the straw/balloon to the car.

Directions for the Teacher:
First, use a pre-made balloon car to show how the compressed air exiting the balloon causes the car to move. Help the kids understand Newton's second law, and momentum, and show how these physical laws are demonstrated in the balloon powered car.
Depending on the age of the students, you may want to have certain parts preset (ie, holes punched, wheels already cut out, straws already slit at the ends). Demonstrate making a car for the class, and then send them into groups of 5 or six with an adult supervisor to help them build the balloon-powered
