The Idea

This toy design is known as the magnetic newton's craddle. The toy is designed to be watched with little human action needed. Similar to the original newton's craddle, this one causes the metal sphere located at the opposite end of the dropped sphere to bounce upward while the center metal spheres to remain in place. The basic principles this toy is based upon is magnetism, and tansfer or force/energy.

How It Works

The magnetic newton's craddle works by having a person pull one of the magnetized sphere up to a desired height and then releasing it to watch the opposite sphere bounce up as the center sphere's stay relatively in the same place. This is because when the initial sphere is released and comes down and gets close to the center spheres, it repelling magnetic force causes the initial sphere to stop before it hits them but still applies a force in the direction it was heading. This force is then carried through the center spheres and into the opposite sphere which is also at certain height away from the center since it too is magnetized to repel the center spheres. This force then pops the opposite sphere from it's place and upwards. After reaching a height less than that of the inital sphere before it was released it falls back down due to gravity and a perpetual motion occurs. This toy can be easily manufactured and should not be too costly since the magnets would not be too strong. The whole toy would be quite durable since everything is made from metal, including the wires holding the spheres in place. This toy is not intended for younger children since the spheres are small enough to be swallowed and the metal wires could become tangled and possibly harm the child.
