<div class="paragraph Heading_1_Gray" style="line-height: 25px; padding-top: 0pt; ">The idea behind this design is to create a toy that would allow kids (approx. ages 8 and up) to create their own 3-D animation movie. It uses the simple idea of motion pictures to create these movies. This idea is that you would put your drawings on a platform that would rotate after pumping a plugger a couple times. The pictures would then fly by windows which would allow you to view your movie.</div>

<div class="paragraph Heading_1_Gray" style="line-height: 25px; ">The basic concept did not change much throughout the design process. The CAD models were created with SolidWorks, and a model was created for each part needed. Our one problem was figuring out how make the inside platform spin from pushing on a plunger. This was key to making a successful toy. Our breakthrough occurred when Ben purchased a salad spinner, which has the same concept. We tore the spinner apart and designed a very similar mechanism that also uses a lead screw. In the end, we were very excited about this find.</div>

<div class="paragraph Heading_1_Gray" style="line-height: 25px; ">In the back of our heads, we tried to keep in mind that almost all the parts would be created on the lathe, except for the spring and the ratchet mechanism. The rachet would be printed with the FDM since it is a piece that we can not machine by hand. Looking back, these models are pretty ambitious, but overall, we were very satisfied with the models.</div>

After a suggestion from Professor Finger, we came to the conclusion that the best route would be to adapt a salad spinner for our own purposes. We came to the conclusion because of the fact that the salad spinner used the same mechanism that our project did. </div>

Square viewing holes were then cut into the top surface before fitting it around the salad spinner’s top and hot glued into a truncated cone shape. The platform was similarly fitted around the salad spinner’s bowl and glued. These two parts would eventually be placed concentrically into each other to form the body. </div>

We similarly wanted to keep the point on the bottom of the salad spinner’s external shell. We used a lathe to remove this piece. </div>

This piece which includes the point was then hot glued onto a circular bottom cut to size from the plastic sheet for a nicer look. Now one should be able to assemble the movie viewer by evenly setting the platform on the point of the bottom, putting the top surface over the platform, and finally the salad spinner’s mechanism in the upper hole. </div>

We found problems that we would never have expected. The lead screw did not have enough rotations in its helical pattern which meant it didn’t spin as fast as we had hoped for. At the same time, it would have been more helpful to have a stiffer outer shell like we had originally designed. This is because even with the aluminum strip supports, the flimsy plastic would buckle and cause a lot of friction. However, to lathe out an outer shell in the alloted time would have been extremely difficult and a waste of money on materials ant time for just a prototype or proof of concept. </div>

To fix this, we hot glued pieces of aluminum strip inside the top surface for extra support. This helped somewhat, but a thicker, more structural plastic would have been better to begin with. </div>
