Project 1, Concept 1: Stick Bricks
James DR Raskob

Stick Bricks are building blocks covered with Velcro. The bricks will be light plastic cubes about 2" across faces. Each face will have brightly colored Velcro on it (each brick will have only one color on it). There are 10 ways to cover a cube with two different types of material, and all will be used. A pack would have a large number of bricks, in a variety of colors and configurations. Packs would also include Velcro squares with an adhesive side
Instructions would encourage children to experiment with making structures and then hanging them from ceilings, attaching them to walls, etc. Velcro is an ideal material for this, since it is very strong and highly reusable for its weight. It can also be colored cheaply. The bricks are made of light but strong plastic, which is quite cheap but fairly durable (the bricks would use similar plastics to those used in making Lego bricks).
