| In order to succeed in the newspaper construction project the way we did, we had to develop our existing strengths, and learn new skills. The design of the project was helped by our combined engineering backgrounds, and our knowledge of statics. I was also crucial that Chris and I had had experience with rolled newspaper construction before. If we hadn’t, we might have wasted a lot of design time just arriving on a suitable design for the newspaper supports. When we drew up our plans, it was important that we assume the ability level of the group building our design was very low, since we had no real gauge of how skilled other teams were at this sort of construction. John’s Architectural background was also very helpful since he could draw accurate pictures to illustrate the different steps of the process. We made illustrations part of out directions, since we all felt that pictures convey far more usable general information than words. We did, however, write down important quantities like lengths, numbers of rolls, and verbal descriptions of complicated drawings. Finally, in the construction phase of the project, we broke it into parts, for quick completion. We all rolled, then built different sections of the structure and assembled them separately.
