Transmitting Data

CAD software can be downloaded over the web as a Java applet to the user’s computer. This software is then used by the engineer to design the part that is to be made by the Cybercut system. The engineer’s computer is then used as a client by the Cybercut system in order to transfer data over the internet, and make necessary calculations. All updated CAD software is placed on the internet, allowing users to design their products with the most up to date software.

Part Limitations

The material limitations placed on the Cybercut process are based on the limitations of the milling machine in use by the system. The current machine in Berkeley can machine polymers, plastics, metals, and other standard milling materials.
Similarly, the size limitations of machined parts are also based on the limitations of the milling machine in use. Currently, the machine in Berkeley can handle a part up to five inches square, but handles a 4.5 inch square piece best.
From these raw part limitations, though, a wide spectrum of products can be made. There are 15 different kinds of bits in the milling machine that allows for different kinds of cuts, holes, and surfaces. All shapes are limited, though, to cuts that are made orthogonal to each of the six original faces.

Cost

The majority of the cost of a Cybercut system is due to the high costs of the equipment. The cost also varies with the material or size of the product to be made, but this is minute compared to the cost of the hardware.
The total cost of a Cybercut facility can cost as much as $55,000.

Manufacturing Speed

One of the major advantage to the Cybercut rapid prototyping method is the speed of the process. Once a design is completed and submitted, the manufacturing process can begin immediately through the CAM controller. The part will be quickly milled, and can be shipped to the customer that same day.
