Lathe Machining

How does it work?
Unshaped material (stock) is secured into the
spindle
on the
headstock
as well as the
tailstock
Once secured, the spindle is spun at a
high velocity
thus
rotating the part
The lathe operator manipulates the knobs and
handwheels
in order to move the cutting
toolbit
around the part
By moving the toolbit along the part, it is possible to remove layers of the part and create
axially symmetric parts
The process we would follow to make our part is as follows:
First, we would shape the stock so that it was the same diameter as the maximum diameter of the part.
We would then, remove the outer layers of the cylinder to the left and right of the part to create the thick middle ring.
Lastly, we would remove the part from the lathe and use a mill to cut the keyway channel.
