Machining on a lathe is typically limited by the size of the available machine. The largest size stock that fits in an average lathe is no more than 8 inches in diameter and 42 inches long; the part of course can be no larger than the original stock. Another limitation for parts made on a lathe is their shape. Because of the nature of the machinery one can only use a lathe to manufacture parts that are roughly cylindrical. Needless to say, the part will also be symmetrical.
