
This frictionless monorail would demonstrate magnetism and frictional forces. The car is attatched to the tracks as shown in the drawing with magnets facing positive pole to positive pole. The magnets would repell each other enough to force the car off the track so the only resistance to the motion of the car would be air resistance. The magnets would be visible from the outside, so the child should be able to notice the car is "hovering" above the track because of the magnets. The monorail could be used in conjunction with a child's existing train set or blocks and is safe for children of all ages; although, the level of complexity makes it better suited for children 4 year and older. There are no moving parts so the monorail should be very durable. However, since the monorail uses many strong magnets, the cost of production may be pretty high. The rest of the parts should not be very expensive. |
