The HPF language has elicited wide comment, both positive and negative, and several vendors are now implementing compilers. In order to reach consensus on the language features, several important capabilities were explicitly not considered; these include parallel input and output, task parallelism, and support for complex data structures. Due to these limitations, we are tentatively planning a new series of HPFF meetings to take place in 1994. The purpose of the HPFF II kickoff meeting is to decide whether a new series of meetings is needed and, if so, what the scope of the new HPF should be. To this end, presentations by vendors, users, and researchers will consider experience with current HPF prototypes and needs for the future.
