Faculty Positions in Learning Science or Educational Technology

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University expects to have up to two new tenure-track faculty positions, starting in September 2007. Although the specific area of research is open, we seek candidates whose work is in learning science and technology research in areas including intelligent tutoring systems, laboratory and classroom experimentation, educational data mining, computer-supported collaborative learning, ubiquitous computing in formal and informal learning settings, and educational design research. New faculty will be invited to join the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center, a facility for theory-based learning research (http://learnlab.org/).

We are an interdisciplinary department and have faculty in a variety of disciplines. More information about the department is available at www.cs.cmu.edu/~hcii. We are open to applicants with Ph.D.s or the terminal research degree in disciplines including, but not limited to psychology, organization science, cognitive science, education, anthropology, design, and computer science. We are open to researchers who perform rigorous empirical laboratory or qualitative field studies, or who design and implement systems, or both. We expect to hire at the assistant professor level but will consider more senior candidates as well.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to research, outstanding academic credentials, and a terminal degree appropriate to their course of study. Candidates should also have a strong interest in graduate and undergraduate education. The highly selective undergraduate, masters and PhD programs in the HCI Institute draw top students from around the world.

Review of faculty applications will begin September 30, 2006. To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by Dec 1.

Each application should include curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, copies of 1-3 representative papers, and the names and email addresses of three or more individuals who have been asked to provide letters of reference. Applicants should arrange for reference letters to be sent directly to the Faculty Search Committee (hard copy or email). Letters will not be requested directly by the Search Committee. All applications should indicate citizenship and, in the case of non-US citizens, describe current visa status.

We strongly encourage electronic applications (text, MS-Word or PDF format), sent to hcii_facultysearch@cs.cmu.edu.
