All 15-100 students with computers should install Metrowerks CodeWarrior (the IDE we will use in class) and Java (the language). Downloading Sun's Java is free for everyone. Most sudents who are unfamiliar with computers will find it simpler to just download CodeWarrior (as indicated below) where CW's installation program will automatically install Java as well. The time to do the download will depend on your modem's speed. The installation should take around thirty minutes.
CMU bought a distribution license from Metrowerks to provide free copies to all students registered in 15-100. There is a link to the download web page on the IPG homepage.
You will need to supply your Andrew User ID and CMU ID. Students registering after the start of the semester may not be immediately added to the database and will not have access to the download web page until they've waited at leas 24 hours after registering. Students on waiting lists will not be allowed access to the software. If you don't have an authorized CMU IP address, check the bottom of this sheet to explain how to get CodeWarrior on your machine.
Some students may be unfamiliar with dowloads and installations. If this is the case, you will want to get a printout of the installation process (found on the download web page) before beginning to install CW. You have no other access to your computer during the CW installation. An alternative description of the ownload/installation process is available from Rich Pattis.
Please contact me if you are having trouble with the installation/dowlod. I will assume every has successfully downloaded this software by the end of the first week of class. Not having installed the software is an invalid excuse for not completing assignments because CW is available in Wean 5419 (open for use evenings & weekends) as well as a number of other clusters on campus.
For registered students without an authorized CMU IP address:Students without an authorized CMU IP address are almost exclusively living off-campus. These students will be unable to download CodeWarrior through the above link.
On some evening during the first few days of classes, a staff person will be available in Wean 5419 who can help install CodeWarrior. However, you will have to either bring your laptop (not a problem) or you'll have to lug in your desktop box. Our staff person will have the standard USB peripherals (mouse, cables, keyboard and monitor).
The day and time for this service will be posted on the announcements page as soon as I learn of it
