Java Pie Menus

Here is an example PieMenu Applet. You'll need the Java 1.2 Plug-in and Java Swing installed in order to use this pie menu. For more information, please check out the Java PieMenu page.
Here's a quick checklist of things to do to try this pie menu out:

  • Right-click somewhere. The pie menu will appear after a short delay.
  • Move the mouse up to File. The submenu will automatically appear after a short delay.
  • Notice that Open is highlighted. This is the default selected item. Basically, it's giving the user a hint of the direction they may want to go.
  • If you rotate around. the pie menu in a circle, you'll see it automatically highlights the corresponding pie slice.
  • Click the left-mouse button outside of the pie menu. This closes the submenu. Clicking with the right-mouse button would have activated the selected item.
If you have a pen device, then try going to pen mode.

  • Mouse Mode has the normal delay before opening submenus, and a smaller inner circle (the close circle).
  • Pen Mode has a longer delay before opening submenus, as well as a larger inner circle. Lastly, the pie menu won't open if you drag the pen around too far.

Here is the source code for the PieMenu, and the Berkeley software license.
Please send me comments on what you think about it.
