Here's some factual information on Mark Singel and Tom Ridge regarding their stands on environmental issues, taken from the newsletter of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Sierra Club (reprinted here without permission): For the first time in its history, the Sierra Club has endorsed a candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania, Lieutenant Governor Mark S. Singel. As Chair of the Recylcing Market Development Task Force, Lieutenant Governor Singel has helped promote the recycling industry in this state by developing markets for recycled products. The result has been not only a cleaner and greener state, but led to the creation of 10,000 new jobs. Mark Singel has also been an active supporter of protecting wetlands and promoting high-speed rail. According to the League of Conservation Voters, Congressman Ridge has the second worst environmental voting record of any Pennsylvania Congressman, with a 20% rating. Congressman Ridge has voted against or was absent on 16 out of 20 crucial environmental votes, including hazardous waste cleanup and wetlands preservation. In fact, Congressman Ridge even voted to strip citizens' rights to a public hearing on the safety of proposed nuclear reactors. Congressman Ridge wants to weaken the Department of Environmental Resources. Mark Singel wants to restructure and improve it. After a very thorough candidate interview and review process, the Sierra Club believes Mark Singel is clearly the better environmental choice and encourages all of its members to actively support the Mark Singel ticket on November 8th.
