Queen Henazeen is still trying to establish Auramkil as a major port by increasing trade with the southern continent, and she's still having problems rallying support for the program.
The high elves haven't become second-class citizens, but apparently they're unhappy about being merely normal citizens, and many are threatening to withdraw their support from Auramkil's defense. The Marek clan is hoping to regain power by stepping into the vacuum and setting itself up as the new Elite Guard. Most of the other clans, including the Parnos and perhaps the Shorin clans, have vanished to parts unknown, perhaps the southern continent or the Far West, depending on which rumors you credit.
The doppleganger trade is defunct as far as anyone knows, but there may still be dops living in the city, and rumor has it they're pissed at their former elven masters. They've been suspected of impersonating high elves and making trouble to heighten tensions between the elven and human populations.
The Auramkil temples are gaining influence, focusing on the services they can provide (and getting some nice contracts for them) rather than what they happen to believe or who they happen to worship. The city is trying to bring some order to the various temples and shrines by asking them to serve particular geographic sectors.
A growing group of mages have come out in support of the Queen and her policies. They're hoping to reduce the price of ink and have had some success researching ways to produce the stuff more cheaply. Ink (probably the real thing, or at least high enough percentage that there haven't been major complaints) in Auramkil currently sells for about 120 or 125gp/vial, though one has to join a "club" and buy in bulk (10 vials is the usual mimimum) to take advantage of the price. A new underworld is also forming around magical ink; Ylena recently heard about stolen ink going for 99gp/vial, just below the going price at Silverton's magic-for-the-masses height.
Auramkil had once indicated that it would join the war against Marakeel if the Western Army first had some significant success -- i.e., they would be happy to show up for the looting. This would seem to be the time.
