MOSCOW, May 25 (UPI) -- Authorities in the eastern Siberian city of Yakutsk (``yah-KOOTSK'') say repeated bombings of an ice jam on the River Lena (``LEH-nah'') have broken up the ice pack, reducing flooding in the city. Officials in Yakutsk, where a state of emergency had been imposed last Friday because of the severe flooding, say Russian air force Su-24 fighter-bombers flew over 40 sorties over four days, dropping 240 bombs on the ice jam over 60 miles (100 km) downstream from Yakutsk. The record flooding was caused by a late spring thaw after an exceptionally snowy winter. The floodwater in Yakutsk is now receding, but authorities still have no figures on the extent of the damage caused.
