MOSCOW, May 26 (AFP) - Russian customs agents seized 65 icons from a Latvian national who was attempting to smuggle the art into the Baltic nation Tuesday, ITAR-TASS reported. Russian authorities said the icons, found in the man's Mercedes, may have been stolen. Experts were working to determine their age and value. Russian churches, with their low to nonexistent security, have become a prime target for art smugglers active in the country. Customs officials have recovered over 800 icons from smugglers this year. The art and artifacts seized by customs agents over the last two years, and returned to the museums and churches they were stolen from, are valued at over 60,000 dollars.
