MOSCOW, May 26 (AFP) - Authorities in a north Caucasus region where a Red Cross worker was recently abducted have detained two suspects in connection with the kidnapping, Interfax reported Tuesday. Geraldo Cruz, a New Zealand national working as a nurse with the International Red Cross, was abducted May 16 in the town of Nalchik, where the relief organization has its North Caucasus headquarters. The abduction prompted Red Cross authorities to remove more than half of its workers from the greater Kabardino-Balkaria region, suspending almost all activities with the exception of its "life-saving programs," Red Cross workers said last week. Kidnappings and crime in general have risen dramatically in the region since the 1996 end of a disastrous war in the neighboring republic of Chechnya. The North Caucasus region has become a particularly dangerous one for foreigners, who are a prime target for kidnappings for ransom by the lawless armed bands who control the region.
