NICOSIA, May 25 (AFP) - A strong earthquake struck off the tourist island of Cyprus Tuesday causing tremors around the eastern Mediterranean seaboard but police reported no casualties or damage. The Cyprus seismological centre said the quake measured 5.0 on the open-ended Richter scale although colleagues in nearby Israel gave a reading of 5.2. Most quakes in Cyprus measure less than 4.8. The epicentre was 10 kilometres (six miles) off the west coast resort of Paphos at a depth of 30 kilometres (20 miles) under the sea, the Cyprus geological survey said. Police said the quake, which hit at 8:15 p.m (1715 GMT) was most strongly felt in Paphos and the second city of Limassol where it sent residents scurrying out of their houses, but it was also felt here in the capital. "It was the strongest quake I have felt in 12 years living here and cut my telephone line," said Michael Wrase, a resident of the village of Kolossi near Limassol. In Israel, police said the temblor was felt the length of the Mediterranean coast but did not cause any damage.
