LARNACA, Cyprus, May 26 (AFP) - Two Russian Greeks were remanded in custody Wednesday in connection with the brutal murder of a 71-year old Belgian woman in this south coast resort. The Larnaca district court ordered Odysseas Afouxenides, 21, and Ioannides Kapasakalides, 19, both Pontic Greeks from Russia who took Greek nationality after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, detained for eight days. The two men face possible charges of premeditated murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime, police said. A Russian is also being sought by police after he was named by the two suspects already in detention. Police found the body of Ethel Althea Downing on the bathroom floor of her seafront flat Tuesday with multiple stab wounds. Investigating officer Aristides Tziapouras told the court that Afouxenides rented a flat with the other suspect in the same building where the victim was found. Inside their flat police uncovered a blood-stained towel and drops of blood on the wash basin, the court heard. Police said they had recovered a handbag, credit card, travellers cheques and jewellery belonging to the victim from the hotel room where the suspects were arrested. A post-mortem Wednesday found that Downing had died after a stab wound to the jugular -- she was stabbed twice in the neck and once each in the head and stomach, and was also beaten around the face. Downing, who had joint Belgian-Cypriot nationality after living on the eastern Mediterranean tourist island for 25 years, had lived alone since 1993 and was involved in charity work.
